Architectural Programming

Realizing your Building Wish List

A project program, or a written description of the project requirements, is typically provided by the client.  We can help organize this wish list.  General information that is useful to include in the program include design objectives, schedule objectives, and budget objectives.  Additionally, programs will usually list the rooms desired along with size requirements, adjacency preferences, qualities sought, and any other specific needs.  Following is an outline:

Program Outline

Describe the architectural character desired …a contemporary cape home with interesting lines, windows, detail…)

Describe how you envision the spaces (…open floor plan but not completely open; good sight lines…)

Describe the type of light desired (…lots of natural light…)

Describe any preferences in materials (…a lot of different/eclectic materials for walls, cabinets, stairs, doors…)

Describe how you plan on using the spaces (…accommodating to many guests…)

Describe the relationship of spaces (…integrating outside and inside, many exterior levels on same level as house…)

Program Details

List rooms with requirements (…new living room/dining room combination, 10’ ceilings, w/fireplace as centerpiece…)

(…sunroom, large enough for 4 large chairs and separate table for 4…)

Project Parameters

Note any schedule constraints (…would really like to be in before Christmas…)

Note target budget, indicate amount of flexibility

Scrapbooks

It is always useful to provide your architect with reference images.  We use Houzz and Pinterest as scrapbook tools.  Notate your images to describe what you like.
